After You're Gone: The Inheritance Gap That's Leaving Crypto Fortunes Locked Forever

There is a particular kind of financial tragedy unfolding in American households right now — one that produces no headlines, no legal proceedings, and no visible victims. A crypto holder dies. Their assets remain perfectly intact on-chain, untouched by hackers, unaffected by exchange collapses, secured behind cryptographic walls that no government or corporation can breach. And then those assets stay there. Forever. Because no one else knows how to reach them.
Self-custody, as most practitioners define it, means holding your own private keys rather than entrusting them to a third party. By that definition, millions of Americans are already self-custodying their digital assets responsibly. But there is a second definition — one that almost no one discusses — and it matters far more when the original holder is no longer present. True custody is not merely the ability to access your assets. A trusted co-signer who holds a key must understand their responsibility and must be reachable when needed. The configuration must be revisited if any key holder becomes unavailable. These are manageable challenges, but they require ongoing attention — not a one-time setup.
Dead Man's Switch Protocols
A more automated approach to inheritance access involves what practitioners call a dead man's switch — a system that releases critical information or triggers a predefined action if the holder fails to check in within a specified period.
